Dear Friends of St Charles,
Warm greetings fromSr. Jansi, Sr. Litty, Sr. Celine and all the sisters in Iringa.
Hope all is well with you and the Africa group.
We are all keeping well.
Just to give you some news about school before I journey to Dodoma tomorrow.
In 2017, we have had some transfers of sisters, hence Sr. Anita has gone to formation in Morogoro, and Sr. Litty George has taken up the school as Headmistress, and Sr. Madhu Kumari to assist her, with Sr. Celine as Manager.
What is more is that the school had mass to start the academic year, celebrated by Fr. Freedie SDB, and the students have elected new leaders for classes and houses and school. The new leaders have taken oaths to do their responsibility
On the 18th Feb we had meeting with parents in which many issues like academic status, in order to have better performance, health status of students, advising parents to keep their children clean and give nutritious food, delay in parents paying school fees affecting the administration negatively in the running of the school, etc. were discussed. Unfortunately, we have not kept a visual record of this meeting.

This year the Salesians of Don Bosco have come up with a project for teaching children through digital means.
Teachers being trained for profuturo
This project is funded by Profuturo, a Spanish NGO, in partnership with the Salesians Mission in Madrid and is implemented by Don Bosco Networks Tanzania. The project is line with the Holy Father’s vision of strengthening education and giving pupils in developing world equal opportunities as those in the developed world.
The pilot project will introduce digital technology into current educational system to improve the learning experience. Through a digital platform, primary school instructors will be able to deliver lessons using modern teaching aids such as online systems that allow students to access training content through their tablets. Teachers will, on the other hand, access relevant training materials, closely monitor students’ performance to offer needed support to weak students.
They have launched this programme in four regions in Tanzania, namely, Dar es salaam, Dodoma, Morogoro and Iringa. And fortunately, we were also chosen by the organization. The programme was launched in Mafinga- Iringa region on 16th March 2017. Sixty students and three teachers from our school participated in this ceremony. Our school has been gifted with 48 tablets with a laptop for teacher use.
Environment and Health Care:
Le gouvernement a demandé aux élèves de planter des arbres dans le cadre de la préservation de l’environnement.
Un prix sera attribué au meilleur projet.
Le gouvernement a promis de donner des filtrer pour l’eau dans chaque classe.
We also received fifty saplings from the municipal office on 17th March 2017. The inspectors from the Environment office visited us and were happy. The trees are planted and are taken by the students with the help of their teachers and sisters. Our students are getting prepared to take part in the essay competition on ‘Environment Preservation’. We are hopeful that our school will win a prize.
We have also been promised by the government drinking water filters for each class. We shall update you soon with the happenings of the school.
Need of the school: Les besoins de l’école
Pre- primary section in the assembly ground
les élèves dans la cour
The school has outdoor play items but they are scanty compared with the number of students. We have 218 students on roll in pre-primary and next year we will have even more students.
Children on the playground, and, buildings behind are of the technical school
We also run short of toilets which is the most urgent need of the school. There are only four toilets for the whole pre-primary school. Even the teachers have to share the same. I haven’t yet got the quotation for the same.
Children waiting for their turn in front of the toilet

As you know, our school is only fenced. Now there is also an urgent need to build a wall at least on one side. This is because our neighbours have built a Polytechnic Boarding School next to our school and students from there keep peeping into the classrooms while our students are in the class and this disturbs their concentration. We are also worried about their safety while they are in the classrooms as these boys keep moving about most of the time.
May God Bless you and your Generosity and reward you in abundance.
Sr. Litty George

A loving Christmas wishes and prayerful support from Kereng Sisters, Staff and Hostel children. Thank you word comes from the Bottom of our hearts for your valuable contribution for the Sparsh therapy Centre towards these Tribal children of Kereng.
Here we are four Sisters, 36 children in the boarding and 32 disable children. We are working in the field of Spiritual, Educational, Social, Health and Pastoral in seven villages. On 8th of October the Kereng Mission celebrated the silver jubilee.
This year we have only 36 children in the boarding. In the boarding weaker children are given special attention for their studies. Children are encouraged to take part in the various activities like football match, speech, dance and group song conducted in the boarding and in the school. Month of August our hostel children took part in the foot ball match in the school and won the match.
This year we have treated 1798 patients in our Health Centre. We have treated cases such as Malaria and typhoid. Awareness programs are conducted in the villages and schools cleanliness, hygiene, safe drinking water, nutritious food, immunization and spacing between children etc.
We have about 32 physically challenged children in our centre. We take care and tried to get their certificates, stipend etc from blocks. We help them in their studies by sending them to special schools run by the Govt. and NGOs. Already 10 children we have found who need exercises. Building is under construction. Plastering work is going on. Month of January we will be able to complete the building. We are happy that at least we are able to serve and make difference in their lives.
On again I thank The Almighty for the gifts of you all. I assure my prayers for their generous help and the contribution towards the building. Kindly keep us all in your prayers. May the Almighty God bless you all.
With love & Prayers,
Dear Madam Marie Pierre & Associates,
Loving Christmas greetings from Sr. Gemma and all the sisters and children at Dumka. We have no words to thank you enough for all that you do for us. We only pray that blessings of the New Born Babe be always with you. Our children are so happy and thankful for the new home you have given them and the new dining hall. This year we have 100 children in our boarding. We are 5 sisters; Sr. Gemma is the new superior, Three of us work in the school, Sr. keerti works with the villagers trying to reach medical help to them, conducting awareness programmmes and also takes care of the children at our boarding and that of the fathers.
We have about 350 students in the school, most of them are boarders, with us and with the fathers. In the evenings we spend time coaching up our students and caring for them. , Some of them are very weak and needs medical attention too. We have two of our handicapped children Emily and Monica. They are doing well in studies and happy and hoping to get alright as we are trying to help them with your generosity. Our girl Sonali whom miss Zoue is helping is preparing to write her class V exam for the first time . We are helping her to study and she also cooks delicious food for us.
The children have already started enjoying their meal in the dining hall. It is indeed a great blessing in this biting cold. May Jesus bless your large heartedness towards the poor children of Dumka. The plastering is not yet started due to lack of workers though we have bought the cement and other things. Soon we will be starting the work and hope to finish it by January. Once again I thank you for all the help and support you are continuing to give us. Have a wonderful Christmas & a grace filled New Year! May The Holy Child bless you and all your dear ones with lasting peace & joy!
With love & prayers, Sr Gemma

St.Charles School, Kathirvedu.
Education is the best gift we can offer to a child. Keeping in mind the future of the children we care for them in our school by providing the best education possible. Our children have a homily atmosphere to learn many things for life at our campus. Here we do teach life coping skills with academic lessons by providing extracurricular activities and fun in learning. Our campus language is English and we teach English not as subject but as language itself.
Most of our students hail from families who are deployed in the civil construction works, commercial establishment, markets and shanties. The skilled are engaged in tough manual works for long hours earning meagre wages.
Some of them have their establishments at small hutments and pavements. When they go for works, they leave the babies and small children just on the streets without any care or security. This low financial background tells the tale of their morality and misery in life. To add to this the Vardh Cyclone on Dec 9th and 10th devastated the area and left them without anything ..
These are the houses of our children which are collapsed by the recent Cyclone in December 9th and 10th.
Kathirvedu is the place few kilometers away from our school where in many children are being educated in our school. This is a slum pocket which is surrounded by mushroom growth of many tiny slums. About 40 percent are migrants from the rural areas thronged in this place in search of employment so as to earn their livelihood and to alleviate poverty
Some of the houses were woven by coconut leaves and asbestos sheets. Now those houses are not to be seen due to the Cyclone. Children have moved away to their relatives’ house and some of them have even gone to their native places for safety and shelter.
The financial help that you give help us to care for these poor children of our school. We do provide quality education to the children keeping in mind the future of their families. Now it would be difficult for the parents to concentrate on their children due to pressure from all sides like financial constrains due to Demonetization and no cash payment for the cooli work done and adding to this Cyclone stricken repair and up keep needs money.
A few photos showing the sorry state of the house of our children.
Pray for them and us too.
We are aware that the rich in this state are having enough money but no heart to give.Only the politicians, business heads can enjoy life. What to do?
